Center for Strong Families

The CSF Initiative

Sound Outreach participates in the Center for Strong Families initiative, funded by the United Way of Pierce County. Drawing on established research about the most effective services for our clients, this initiative bundles together employment coaching, financial coaching, and access to public benefits through comprehensive case management for economically vulnerable households throughout Pierce County.

Through this initiative, Sound Outreach operates three Financial Opportunity Centers, which you can read about below. Additionally, Sound Outreach Financial Coaches work at other locations, such as the Tacoma Housing Authority, to support client services.

Hilltop Financial Opportunity Center

1106 Martin Luther King Jr., Tacoma WA 98405

Sound Outreach’s Hilltop Financial Opportunity Center, part of the Center for Strong Families (CSF) initiative, operates from our location at 1106 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. This United Way-funded center bundles together employment and financial coaching, as well as access to public benefits through comprehensive case management for economically vulnerable Hilltop households.

Sound Outreach takes a cross-sector approach to provide resources to program participants. In 2019, our offices at Alberta Canada Building began hosting 4-5 Tacoma Housing Authority staff in our space, and a street-facing ATM, establishing a neighborhood financial center complete with our CSF programming and access to financial services.

For 20 years, Sound Outreach has served as a trusted agency on the Hilltop, providing SNAP and Apple Health enrollment, free tax preparation, housing counseling, and homeless services. Our new focus on financial wellbeing is helping our neighbors to reduce debt, build credit, and grow wealth—all crucial elements for current residents when considering how economic development will affect rents and rising costs of living.
